The human body is a funny thing, and it's intriguing how it seems to know what it needs without any conscious interference from that pesky brain. For example, lately I have been craving beets. I've developed a serious obsession. Last night I went through various recipes online and bookmarked every beet recipe that looked remotely appealing, and there were dozens.
I don't even eat beets. Once, in my teens, I had a fresh beet for the first (and only) time, and it was okay, I guess. Every other exposure has been to pickled beets, which I do not like at all. One bite and I spit it out. Bleh. Beets aren't something I even think of as food most of the time. One of my parents must not have liked them, because they were never on the dinner table.
I cannot stop wanting beets. Beets all the time. I finally broke down and roasted some. They are the most delicious thing I have ever had in all my life. I wolfed down the first one, and now my tummy is rumbling for more. Apparently beets are very nutritious and are a rich source of folate, among other things. I had no idea until I looked it up just now. Okay, my brain had no idea. The rest of me, on the other hand...
So I guess I'm eating beets now. There are worse things to crave. I've been very ill for awhile. If I start to feel better, that will be too funny. How does the body remember what it's looking for from one beet eaten fifteen years ago?
